Robert Peaslee, The Father of Nickel Brazing

Robert Peaslee was born January 4, 1917 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His family moved to the Cincinnati area, where he was raised and attended the the University of Cincinnati, earning a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1940. He worked for Curtiss Wright Corporation as a Metallurgist during WWII, after which he was transferred to the Engineering division and became the Welding Engineer in charge of fabrication development on jet engines. It was during this time he decided to furnace braze a test specimen of "Colmonoy 6", a nickel alloy developed by the Wall Colmonoy Corporation of Madison Heights, MI. At 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, the alloy successfully brazed jet engine parts together, a process we now know as diffusion brazing. In 1951, Mr. Peaslee co-authored the first Welding Journal paper on Nickel Brazing. He was also involved in the creation of brazing alloy specification. He established the first commercial job shop for nickel brazing of aircraft components and was instrumental in the expansion of this operation into eight facilities. In 1970 he organized the first AWS Brazing Conference, and went on to start the first and only Brazing and Soldering division of AWS. For many years, Mr. Peaslee authored the Brazing Q &A Column in the Welding Journal. In 2003, Wall Colmonoy Corporation published a compilation of 11 years of the columns under the title Brazing Footprints: Case Studies in High Temperature Brazing.
Robert Peaslee passed away March 5, 2009, at the age of 92.  His contributions to our industry remain unmatched; his work a true testament to American ingenuity.
